S.S. Lazio extended their perfect record against Slovenian opposition with a 1-0 win against NK Maribor at the Stadio Olimpico.

After a first half in which the woodwork was the main protagonist, the home side finally managed to find a way through on 62 minutes thanks to Ederson’s maiden UEFA Europa League goal. Hernanes later missed a penalty after Jovan Vidovič was sent off for the visitors, but the Biancocelesti had done enough to go a point clear of Maribor at the Group J summit.

First Serie A goal for Ederson

Lazio made sure that they put an end to their recent poor form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Siena at the Olimpico.

The Biancocelesti had lost their last two Serie A games, raising question marks over their ambitions for a top-three spot, but their cause was boosted significantly by Ederson’s first goal for the club – a header from a corner.

And when Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo brought down Miroslav Klose on the 37th minute, Cristian Ledesma netted the subsequent penalty, which proved the match-winner as Massimo Paci made for a tense ending in injury-time.

The win moves Vladimir Petkovic’s men to fourth, but the Tuscans reside in a lowly 19th place.

French Legend Eric Cantona to be awarded the 2012 Golden Foot Award

The great French player, Eric Cantona, who played his best football at Manchester United, will be honoured with the Golden Foot Award in Monte Carlo. The award will be given to him at the Gala Ceremony to be held at the Sporting Salle des Étoiles, at 8 PM, on Wednesday October 17th (Reserve your table). The legendary French player, known as “King Eric” to his fans at Manchester United, played with the number seven in his career there from 1992 to 1997. His talent, style of player, and strength of character left an indelible mark in the history of the Red Devils and the Premiere League. At Manchester United, Eric Cantona became English champion four times, winning two FA Cups as well.

Born in 1966, Eric Cantona started his career at Auxerre later to move to England. He played 188 games for Manchester United scoring 82 goals. He played 45 times for the French national “Blues” team, scoring 20 goals. His memorable skill is remembered in the spectacular goals he scored with Manchester United, making him the fan favourite. Cantona was voted the best Reds player of all time by the Manchester United fans. He was admitted to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002,and in 2004 Eric Cantona was included in the Fifa’s list of the greatest 100 living players. After his football career terminated at Manchester, Eric Cantona promoted Beach Soccer winning the world cup with France in 2005 as player coach. He has also appeared several movies as an actor and producer.

Eric Cantona will leave his immortal footprints in the Champions Promenade in Monaco on October 17th. The Golden Foot Award 2012 is held in conjunction with Sportel. Eric Cantona will be joined by German star Lothar Matthaus and Italy’s Franco Baresi in this memorable award Gala ceremony. An auction of rare signed pictures of Eric Cantona, will take place at the
Gala to benefit Fight Aids Monaco.

With the contribute of the 2011 winner Ryan Giggs, the new candidates to the “Golden Foot”, the international career award, have been announced:

Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Iker Casillas (Spain), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden), Ricardo Kaká (Brazil), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Carles Puyol (Spain), Raúl González Blanco (Spain), Clarence Seedorf (Netherlands), Xavi Hernández (Spain).

The names have been chosen by the Golden Foot jury, composed by 52 journalists representing sports media all over the world, and event promoter, World Champions Club (WCC).

The winner will be chosen by football fans, who will decide the star who will leave his footprints on the Champions Promenade, the football “Walk of Fame” on the seafront of the Principality of Monaco. You can vote through our website votenow.goldenfoot.com until 12:00 am (Monte Carlo time) of next October 12, 2012.

Golden Foot award is given every year to the greatest players in history of football under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and in collaboration with Monaco Tourist and Convention Authority’s Convention Bureau. The 2012 prize-giving ceremony will be hosted on October 14 in Monte Carlo.
